SPECIAL NOTICE — CODE CASE 2199 — 2.25Cr-1.6W-VCb

In April 2009, ASME issued a Special Notice concerning
0 ^! o; y* e1 C5 pthe use of Code Case 2199, 2199-1, 2199-2, and 2199-3. These! _- X5 p! W, Q8 f2 e0 l
Cases address the use of 2.25Cr-1.6W-V-Cb (Grade 23) material' @, m2 o4 P" {; t7 ~& }. z8 X$ }
for Section I applications. Table 1 of Code Case 2199-3 was! z& W, I% c' z/ u9 e4 S
revised to ensure adequate material hardenability and to modify
$ \& B3 ?. K' b* Xsubparagraph (b) to clarify hardness testing requirement. For' c) B# p' ?6 Y! b
Table 1, the maximum amount of N was reduced, the minimum+ J* u, ~% u) i7 \$ }4 D
amount of B was increased, a limit on Ni was added, a Ti2 d0 {6 [, t9 C* f+ W, `! m
requirement was added and a Ti to N ratio was added. An# n; m3 t. Z8 R6 e3 _5 _3 y
exemption to the Ti:N ratio was included based on hardness test: n O8 u, w( t% B; B" n! ^1 z
results from fully hardened material. Sub-paragraph (b) was; a" u; a$ c# ~7 ]4 w
modified to clarify when in the processing order the maximum/ v% P/ i5 U( l7 C$ U5 U
hardness limit would be invoked. Manufacturers are cautioned7 G+ D4 c0 c, V( u# n. |& ?
that these revisions to Case 2199 have safety implications
5 s- E% T% L5 R6 S7 C9 \) }4 ?insofar as material produced to earlier revisions of the Case
9 p. g/ o, Q% D1 Y3 Q: q8 q& m(2199-3, 2199-2, etc.) could meet the chemistry requirements6 a0 F' d) ?4 K, y) R
specified in the Code Case, but it may not achieve the specified

A Special Notice was issued by ASME stating that Code Case, R5 m, C" p8 C) N' b4 u( G) C6 c& |
2199-4 should now be used, and the use of Code Cases 2199,/ J: E4 I1 p8 ]$ J
2199-1, 2199-2, 2199-3 should be discontinued immediately. A
