7 h: I1 Y8 N/ I0 Z8 NThis is the inaugural volume of the book series “Engineering Materials

materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area  c. d  a3 @2 z# e/ l6 C1 m; P
largely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of" c  o$ f( k, ~: G* \6 q( _8 r
materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be3 E- z+ \, y, `! H
distinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of

than just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of( _" A6 e8 m8 w* `; {5 d9 N( o
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between1 d  D  u8 y9 F& c
science and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to1 [7 {/ G7 I- R. n7 E0 `9 v% m* ^: ?
insufficient communication between the science community and the$ H8 \0 {& Z. o0 L
application community. This book series is intended to alleviate this

the books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and; w7 e) _; f( Z
