In April 2009, ASME issued a Special Notice concerning
9 X0 O6 H, D. Q% v- A/ A8 [the use of Code Case 2199, 2199-1, 2199-2, and 2199-3. These
$ c7 i% K5 A2 ]$ D3 G1 O2 R7 rCases address the use of 2.25Cr-1.6W-V-Cb (Grade 23) material
6 n0 {6 X$ A; g9 a/ Y% T0 j/ ^for Section I applications. Table 1 of Code Case 2199-3 was. _. V- w, R& j& b
revised to ensure adequate material hardenability and to modify
7 w, k$ |0 }$ n u) Rsubparagraph (b) to clarify hardness testing requirement. For
r% b5 R; `; N0 t3 t9 WTable 1, the maximum amount of N was reduced, the minimum* L! A& R- l+ s8 D! U( G
amount of B was increased, a limit on Ni was added, a Ti
/ u( S7 n- n4 b/ l6 U! ^requirement was added and a Ti to N ratio was added. An
( f1 Q4 h0 j( ?! J9 p% Kexemption to the Ti:N ratio was included based on hardness test1 I% j$ ^9 {5 `$ K, e3 Y3 y( n
results from fully hardened material. Sub-paragraph (b) was
8 u6 O+ R- ?' |7 n3 fmodified to clarify when in the processing order the maximum
" P: K% v o+ {/ O5 whardness limit would be invoked. Manufacturers are cautioned3 }% v+ P: y) p7 E
that these revisions to Case 2199 have safety implications
. k8 o" _2 P: Y( @8 yinsofar as material produced to earlier revisions of the Case3 ]% `, b3 d- `6 Z
(2199-3, 2199-2, etc.) could meet the chemistry requirements. l4 j5 A, u N3 }' v& `, o, F D$ ^
specified in the Code Case, but it may not achieve the specified
& ~" z( i8 E8 f i5 M% M# pmechanical properties following the normalizing heat treatment.

2199-4 should now be used, and the use of Code Cases 2199,
