If you were asked to define the term project, what words would come to mind? Time? Resources (or lack of)?
3 K. n/ T9 N4 }9 KOne-of-a-kind effort? Deliverables or products? Complex? No authority over other groups? Budget?
6 P: m) l7 A2 TA project is a unique effort to introduce or produce a new product or service conforming to certain1 k6 V) s" v' v) Z: r# O
specifications and applicable standards. This effort is completed within the project parameters including fixed' \3 B0 L0 b' P6 q
time, cost, human resources, and asset limits. Projects are said to be similar to the mating of two elephants:
- u8 a/ ?8 }' C6 K7 P! xThey start at a very high level with lots of noise and activity, but it takes forever for anything to materialize!
. t# \9 U: a) A% ?A more serious definition is that a project is a well-organized development of an end product that had a
9 x' o9 \+ f8 |. z3 Q) adiscrete beginning, a discrete end, and a discrete deliverable. Our goal is to help you become more organized
, E3 b$ S- T8 T  r! K. Z* U3 cas you work toward this objective.: a& D; f7 l7 C9 C

; @4 c6 l$ F: n, |) a! g9 ~Project management is the discipline that relates all of those words that you thought of that apply to project.
$ o* j# c0 v2 Y8 d1 pThis discipline cultivates the expertise to plan, monitor, track, and manage the people, the time, the budget,
9 P2 h% n6 x7 o9 n! b9 yand the quality of the work on projects. Project management fulfills two purposes: (1) It provides the
, R# T$ q0 B" Jtechnical and business documentation to communicate the plan and, subsequently, the status that facilitates
1 _8 c1 D# t9 |1 }comparison of the plan against actual performance, and (2) it supports the development of the managerial5 [" _/ h- D% `% P6 s
skills to facilitate better management of the people and their project(s). Project management is a proactive# n$ n7 o3 {: M3 @$ @' I. }  j
style of management. Negotiation techniques and good communication and analytical skills are integral parts
4 ^$ D& U4 c! \of this approach. Another key ingredient is the evaluation of performance against those objectives. Central to
