This is the inaugural volume of the book series “Engineering Materials
; F; d6 m- h2 y- Xfor Technological Needs”. The technological needs relevant to this
% [, M S& \" x9 |series include those that are related to the electronic, optical, magnetic,
( B* _& h( k+ b& {" G$ `0 w) jthermal, electrochemical, energy, environmental, structural, construction,

( H2 `5 n9 {9 x9 s4 BEach book in the series addresses materials that serve various functions

The books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on h9 H$ J" `0 R/ `, ?
materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area/ B. k& n) A; C2 A
largely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of
0 x' V0 F9 }, Nmaterials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be6 {* i5 h, x5 K7 y% P. k' I
distinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of
A* Y B4 E* ?' Happlications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,
0 b4 J/ H' {) F2 E+ |! R# t* Kthe relevant materials may include metals, polymers, ceramics,
3 Q R! L H3 ~* q! q8 ucomposites and semiconductors, which constitute the traditional classes

applications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather
2 f/ C3 q+ L8 K( C1 r( sthan just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of3 x3 M& O0 o3 K
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between( B8 p: P2 v: J
science and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to$ c2 K5 w+ t. _, ^( n/ Q5 d
insufficient communication between the science community and the
( t: M2 Q- R) o, I9 japplication community. This book series is intended to alleviate this. r N6 T, c# b6 q r
problem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The
) [' L( h6 N6 D/ D9 Wbooks do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in9 t" [$ h: G# G3 }- x
materials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,, S7 H/ A1 U" `- G8 O" @
the books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and
