The wind turbine design package Focus has been developed by the knowledge centre WMC starting from a program for rotor blade fatigue analysis. The program Phatas has been developed at ECN as program for the simulation of the aeroelastic response of wind turbines. Since 2003 the program Phatas is part of design package Focus. This combination is used for the calculation of the design loads of many modern large size wind turbines. Together with Phatas the stochastic wind simulation program SWIFT is included in Focus. For the purpose of design load calculations following the IEC or GL criteria, a pre-processor ‘LCprep’ is available that generates the input of many load cases that are required for certification. For the analysis of the dynamic response of the complete wind turbine also the controller has to be modelled. For this purpose the program Phatas has a simple built-in P-D controller, although a turbine-specific controller can be used is this if provided as DLL; Dynamic Link Library. The program Phatas has an interface for a DLL from the ECN Control Design Tool (‘CDT’) and for a DLL that is developed with another interface. From the experiences with design analyses with the Focus+Phatas design tool some examples are presented such as the effect of ‘peak shaving’, the pitch rate with which the turbine is stopped, and the dynamic response in case of a grid loss.
