2. Various Processes of Producing SendustType Alloys/ t% T/ J% Y* r
Inthe early 1980’s, the developments of using magnetic metal powder tapes as highcoercive recording media have brought Sendust alloys into commercial use formagnetic recording heads. Sendust alloys are the most suitable materials forthe above applications because their high magnetic flux density, good wearresistance and excellent high permeability. The properties of Sendust alloyschange depending on preparation methods. This section summarizes various processesof producing Sendust type alloys, focusing on the effects of different annealingconditions.

Forthe Sendust alloys in the cast ingots form, several investigators reported thatthe properties are influenced by the heat treatments [Sel41] [Yam44] anddependent on the temperatures of measurements [Yam44] [Zai41] [Chi52] [RLW58].However, they didn’t establish the optimum conditions of heat treatments. Inthe 1980’s, T. Tanaka et. al. investigated the effects of the heat treatmentson the soft magnetic properties of Sendust alloys and showed that the softmagnetic properties are considerably affected by the quenching temperature[TKH82] [TH85]. Their results also displayed that the optimum quenchingtemperature and the values of initial and maximum permeabilities vary with thealloy composition.

The ingots were homogenized at 1100°C for 5 h. The ring samples were spark cut from the plates sliced from ingots. The samples werecontinuously cooled at a rate of 100°C /h. Quenching in asilicone oil bath was performed from the various temperatures (400°C-800°C). |
