Theexcellent soft magnetic properties including high permeability and low hysteresisloss of Fe-Si-Al alloys were first reported in 1936. Optimum magneticproperties are achieved over a narrow region of compositions aroundFe-9.6wt%Si-5.4wt%Al (Fe73.7Si16.6Al9.7) andthe alloy is well known as Sendust. Masumoto’s alloys were melted in vacuumfrom raw materials and cast in ring form. The specimens were annealed for 1hour at 1000°C andslowly cooled. The initial and maximum permeabilities are very high near the compositionsof 9.5-10% Si, 5-5.5% Al, as shown in the diagrams of Fig. 1.1. However, these alloys have poor ductility at room temperature andare limited for DC applications in cast form, or insulated powder cores forhigh frequency inductors.
