A wind farm’s SCADA data stream contains a wealth of information, routinely discarded, that could be used to improve the management of the wind farm. A suite of software tools has been developed to visualise SCADA data in various ways, including power curves against time and wind direction, and lost yield concurrent with error codes. Statistics derived from the data have been shown to correlate with phenomena such as turbulence and wake effects. Metrics are being developed that can give early diagnosis of turbulent fatigue, blade fouling and other indicators of lost yield and predictors of mechanical failure.
