performance and durability of the competing materials for each specific

The books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on3 Q# _7 u! T: j/ o/ G. b
materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area
) N% c3 k- a- }2 X5 O0 d" I: P  u0 Hlargely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of: q. Q- Y2 N2 _2 W- u
materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be! K1 O6 m8 @; ]+ {
distinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of3 j1 `8 [$ p( l9 P
applications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,  a9 d+ z7 m5 ?
the relevant materials may include metals, polymers, ceramics,
5 f$ j& ~  y6 e" v$ ^composites and semiconductors, which constitute the traditional classes  H. G1 K4 x' @: C* d3 g- W
of materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of
( `: r5 K5 n! ~9 @applications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather' b  f, L- l, T3 u
than just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of3 b5 E' w/ {) \2 g
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between0 Z$ C# z0 r" X3 U( K
science and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to
! L% t, ~; P+ Rinsufficient communication between the science community and the
1 X* ?$ p* t& {& U" |0 Vapplication community. This book series is intended to alleviate this  e) A4 |5 q( u
problem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The4 Y1 q$ A# z/ f2 t/ a' B; }
books do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in
$ n/ a/ Q" l! M$ _materials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,3 P4 w, I, o$ B
the books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and
/ g1 m: }5 B3 k/ P4 G" t! `graduate levels. In addition, due to the timeliness and importance of the! Y0 Y# E, X& {& G  U; F
topics and to the inclusion of an up-to-date list of references, these books
