If you were asked to define the term project, what words would come to mind? Time? Resources (or lack of)?
( b1 Y; L. u! S0 f, OOne-of-a-kind effort? Deliverables or products? Complex? No authority over other groups? Budget?

specifications and applicable standards. This effort is completed within the project parameters including fixed
9 u' [5 J4 `6 }! F8 v+ Ktime, cost, human resources, and asset limits. Projects are said to be similar to the mating of two elephants:. I, G/ t2 `: G6 J, C, b- g
They start at a very high level with lots of noise and activity, but it takes forever for anything to materialize!, }& h6 @% ^$ R
A more serious definition is that a project is a well-organized development of an end product that had a
, s* T2 f# R( kdiscrete beginning, a discrete end, and a discrete deliverable. Our goal is to help you become more organized3 f0 _* y$ S* B1 P" U; }% J
as you work toward this objective." Y7 \ v4 T; a0 A5 A
" v' P8 j" S4 K" v
Project management is the discipline that relates all of those words that you thought of that apply to project.
2 B5 A2 L$ }3 TThis discipline cultivates the expertise to plan, monitor, track, and manage the people, the time, the budget,: o1 I7 G4 @# K5 A! s
and the quality of the work on projects. Project management fulfills two purposes: (1) It provides the
+ ?( b! L( v7 P2 I' Vtechnical and business documentation to communicate the plan and, subsequently, the status that facilitates: l1 v T( @- x
comparison of the plan against actual performance, and (2) it supports the development of the managerial
! S& b( M; \$ j7 t7 ?% }7 y, W9 nskills to facilitate better management of the people and their project(s). Project management is a proactive1 x9 Q+ X3 s. L$ V( S- }8 P( w
style of management. Negotiation techniques and good communication and analytical skills are integral parts
! l: l4 x l) c" @( kof this approach. Another key ingredient is the evaluation of performance against those objectives. Central to
$ l" ^8 E% U2 ethis management style is the application of high standards of quality to the project work.4 a* }0 m# S$ v9 d9 f" x$ e7 l
